This optional coverage provides financial protection to help you adjust to lifestyle changes in the event of a critical illness or injury. Covered conditions must meet specific criteria and include cancer, blindness, deafness, paralysis, Alzheimer’s disease, multiple sclerosis, heart attack, stroke and many others.
You may purchase this coverage for you and your spouse in units of $25,000, up to a maximum of $200,000 each. You may also purchase coverage for your dependent children in units of $2,500, up to a maximum of four units or $10,000 per child. Premium rates for Critical Illness insurance are shown on the Sun Life enrolment tool.
If you choose coverage of more than $25,000 for the first time or elect to increase existing coverage for yourself or your spouse, you must provide proof of health by completing a Health Statement form.

- Twenty five covered Covered conditions include: dementia, aplastic anemia, bacterial meningitis, heart valve replacement or repair and others. - Expanded or updated definitions. For example, the definition of life-threatening cancers will list specific types of cancers/ tumors which are covered as well as those which are not
Note, the pre-existing condition clause will apply for all 25 conditions.
